In my personal journey, spiritual deserts always felt like I’d made a wrong, disobedient turn; I just didn’t exactly know where I’d misstepped. After all, the Christian experience in books and retreat messages is mostly defined by victory, mountaintops, and wind-in-your-face-leaps-of-faith. So, for as bad as the desert felt, I must have done something pretty bad to land there. After enough desert experiences, I finally surrendered to the notion that maybe this season I saw as an agonizing detour was meant for some purpose in my life. Out of all my crying-kicking-prayers and a whole lot of Bible study to desperately understand what in the world the Lord was doing with me, I found that dry seasons are a very normal part of God-following; that the Lord actually uses desert seasons quite strategically in His children’s life; and that they most definitely did not equate slippage from God’s love! Explore the Scriptures that describe others who have walked dry paths before of you and discover the hidden streams of refreshing God has for you in this place.
